That’s why we’re proud to offer a comprehensive three-day qualification that meets the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1982.
This course is designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills needed to handle a wide range of workplace first aid situations. It’s also perfect for those responsible for providing first aid in other settings, such as voluntary and community groups.
We are proud to offer flexibility through our blended learning option, allowing you to complete the first day online, followed by two days of face-to-face training. This ensures you can fit the course around your schedule while still receiving high-quality, hands-on instruction.
Our qualification is regulated in the UK and awarded by First Aid Awards (FAA), an organisation recognised by Ofqual and SQA Accreditation. It sits on both the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

The qualification consists of two units which learners must successfully complete to achieve the First Aid at Work (RQF) qualification. Learners holding a valid Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) qualification may commence this course on unit 2 please speak to our team for more information.
Learners aged 14 or over can pursue this qualification but must be 16 to act as a workplace first aider. A minimum of Level 1 literacy or equivalent is recommended. Reasonable adjustments for disabilities, medical conditions, or learning needs can be made per our Reasonable Adjustments and Special Consideration policy, such as assistance with reading or writing.
The first aid assessment is physically demanding. Learners must be able to get to the floor unaided and perform all required tasks, including effective CPR on a manikin at floor level. If you have any concerns, please contact your training provider before attending the course.
The qualification includes 18 guided learning hours (GLH) and 22 total qualification hours (TQT). GLH refers to supervised classroom hours, while TQT includes both GLH and independent study. HSE requires the 18 hours of classroom contact to be spread over at least 3 days. A maximum of 12 learner per instructor.
The qualification is assessed through practical demonstration and a written exam, both of which must be passed to earn the qualification. There is no grading; learners either pass or are referred.
Real-life scenarios are used to test knowledge and skills, with related oral questions asked during the practical assessment. This assessment is ongoing throughout the course, with clear communication on what needs to be demonstrated. Each scenario must be satisfactorily completed to pass. Additionally, learners must pass a written assessment.
The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement.
It is strongly recommended by the Health and Safety Executive that the learner attends annual refresher training
According to HSE guidance, a first aider is no longer considered competent once their qualification expires. To avoid a shortfall of qualified first aiders in the workplace, requalification should be arranged before expiry. To requalify learners can attend a shortened 12-hour two-day requalification course.
The two-day requalification course covers all the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the three-day course in a shorter time. Learners must attend the specific two-day FAW requalification course and cannot simply attend two days of the three-day course.
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress on to other related courses such as our Airway or Catastrophic Bleeding control courses.
