First Aid at Work: Your Legal Responsibilities

If you’re an employer or responsible for health and safety at work, first aid isn’t just good practice — it’s a legal requirement. But what exactly are you required to do?

What Does the Law Say?

The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to:

  • Provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities, and personnel.
  • Assess first aid needs based on your work environment, workforce size, and specific risks.
  • Inform employees about first aid arrangements.

So, What Counts as “Adequate”?

This depends on your risk assessment, but in most cases, it includes:

  • One or more trained first aiders.
  • A fully stocked first aid kit.
  • Clear communication about who the first aiders are and where to get help.

Types of Training

You’ll likely need to arrange either:

  • Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) – For low-risk environments.
  • First Aid at Work (FAW) – For higher-risk settings or larger teams.

We offer both, delivered by currently practicing healthcare professionals who can tailor training to the risks your workplace faces.
